Feets of a family wearing woolen socks warming near the fireplaceIt’s that time of the year again when families gather around the custom fireplace in their Utah homes and tell tales of how things have been. Siblings come together and tell stories about their travels over glasses of wine. Some families have grandchildren over for a whole week. The Christmas season always brings in moments like these.

During this time of family gatherings, there are many things you can do around the fire that can keep your visiting relatives busy and entertained. Here are a few suggestions for activities you can do around the old fireplace:

Call the kids (and the kids-at-heart) for a s’mores party

Set up a tray filled with marshmallows, peanut butter cups, dark chocolate, sliced strawberries and bananas, and graham crackers, and you’ll be spending enough time around the fireplace making up your own treats and sharing stories. Kids have better imaginations when it comes to creating their own s’mores. Add your own ingredients to your tray and watch everyone have a blast.

Have a wine, cheese and crackers night

This one’s for the grown-ups. Set up a rustic platter of aged cheddar, Camembert & Manchego, strong-herbed, salted, or whole-grain crackers, and Tempranillo or Riesling grapes and match it with your best wine, and voila! A perfect evening of catching up with the grown-ups around the warm hearth.

Proof of Santa

On Christmas Eve, when all the kids are sleeping, cut out a cardboard footprint. Place it on the floor by the fireplace and sprinkle a mixture of silver glitter and baking soda around it. When they wake up in the morning, watch them gape in amazement from the footprints Santa left.
